There’s comes a time when shrubs need to be cut back, and whether you have big bushy shrubs or small thorny shrubs it’s important that they’re maintained throughout the year; otherwise a garden can look a little bit jumbled.
When you trim back your shrubs you should always think about the flower heads or the bulbs, and usually the best time to cut these back is after spring when the heads have all come through. The branches that are thin and tend to peel away from a bigger branch should be trimmed and it can help your flowers heads and bulbs survive, while it just looks a lot more appealing.
You should encourage growth if you want your shrubs to fill out a little, and by making sure there are no obstructions, you’re able to let the shrubs and plants grow freely, meaning when you cut them back next time they will be thicker and a lot more presentable. When you do get that thick shrub you can eventually cut it into an intricate shape, and a unique design really can offer a sense of style.
