Useful Tips for Planting Summer Bulbs

Planting summer bulbs is usually fun and exciting because you always get a pleasant surprise when they start popping up in the garden and later start blooming to give your back and front yard the perfect look. Use these tips to fill your garden with beautiful bulbs that will bloom in summer.

Get the Timing Right

Summer bulbs such as cannas, alliums, and agapanthus are usually best planted between March and June (spring) when the soil has warmed up nicely just after winter.

Select Quality Bulbs

Of course, the key to getting beautiful summer beauties is by planting high-quality bulbs. The bulbs are commonly on sale from early spring onwards when they are dormant. Be sure to buy dry bulbs when they are as fresh as possible.

High-quality bulbs are usually plump and firm to the touch. Avoid those that are soft and have mould growing on them. Also, go for big bulbs as they are usually more bloom as compared to smaller ones of the same variety.

Plant on Good Soil

Just like other plants, the bulbs should be planted in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter for fast and healthy growth.

Pick a Spot with Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight is crucial for most plants- including bulbs. Most bulbs require at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. Plant the bulbs in a spot that is in line with direct sunlight for to ensure good blooming.

Plant them Right

To ensure proper growth, use the right planting method.

  • Plant the bulbs in individual holes or dig a trench if they are many. Place them without pushing too hard and ensure that the growing point is pointing upwards. Cover with an adequate amount of soil and firm gently.
  • Make sure that the holes or trenches are deep and wide enough to give room for roots to spread.
  • If you want, you can plant the bulbs in patio containers especially for the tender species.

Water Well

Good watering encourages bulbs to grow faster and healthy. Be sure to water them on a daily basis to avoid dehydration. Watering also helps eliminate air pockets in the soil- air pockets can dry out the bulbs quickly.

Fertilise

While compost is crucial for proper growth, adding fertiliser ensures that the bulbs are getting the right nutrients. Fertilise the bulbs at least twice with Phosphorous (10%), Potassium (18%) and Nitrogen (12%).

Eliminate Weeds

Weeds are notorious for stealing essential nutrients in the soil and also attract diseases and harmful insects. Apart from spraying with a herbicide, you can also spread 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the soil.

Protect them From Animals

Because critters and other animals are notorious for digging up freshly planted bulbs, protect them by either spreading a thick layer of mulch or place a piece of mesh or chicken wire over the soil. You can remove the protective mulch or mesh as soon as they start sprouting.

Be Creative with Designs

If you want a dramatic show of summer-flowering bulbs, you can plant a variety and arrange them in style.

Smart bulb planting can help boost the colour of your landscape in a great way. Be sure to use the above tips the next time you decide to plant summer bulbs in your garden.
